The earliest age that we recommend starting kendo is 8 years old. There are however, some members which bring their children to practice as early as 6 six years old.
Yes! Everyone is welcome to come watch a practice, and if you are interested in participating we can arrange for a free first lesson.

Upon joining the Etobicoke Kendo Club, new members are not required to purchase a uniform (Kendogi/Hakama) right away. We encourage you to wait until you are confident in your long-term commitment to the practice. When you are ready to make that step, we are happy to recommend a supplier for your purchase.
Wearing bogu (armour) requires our Sensei's approval to join the advanced class. As new members can expect to spend up to a year covering the basics, we strongly advise waiting on this purchase until Sensei confirms when you are ready.
No, our Senseis holds a deep commitment to fostering a dojo where every member feels a genuine sense of belonging and connection. To honour that spirit, everyone is encouraged to practice together.
Yes, our dojo is always open to guests! Please check with your Sensei for permission to join our practice, and we kindly ask that you email us before your visit.
Yes we do. Please note any holidays or cancellations will be announced in class and via email.
The Etobicoke Kendo Club actively participates in many tournaments thought the year. Tournament announcements will take place in class and digitally (via email, Facebook and the club’s website). The Etobicoke Kendo Club competes (or has competed) in the following tournaments:
February – Detroit Kendo Tournament and Steveston Kendo Tournament in B.C.
March – Cleveland Kendo Taikai
May – Japanese Canadian Cultural Center Ontario Spring Junior Tournament
June – University of Toronto Tournament
July – The Canadian National Kendo Championship – Held every 3 years in either Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.
August – Montreal Kendo Tournament
October – Etobicoke Kendo Club Ontario Fall Junior Tournament
November – Ontario Senior Tournament and Boston Shufukai Kendo Goyokai Seminar/Tournament
